Back pain affects nearly every aspect of daily life, from how you sleep to how you move, and finding the root cause is the first step. When a patient comes in with back pain, we start by finding out when it started, what the pain feels like, and what movements make it worse. We check for any numbness, tingling, or radiating pain going into the lower extremities, as this helps us identify which nerve is involved. From there, we perform a full evaluation, including palpation and imaging if needed. Treatment includes chiropractic adjustments, decompression therapy, shockwave therapy, and massage, along with home care such as icing and stretching to manage inflammation during recovery. Neck pain can present in several different ways depending on which part of the cervical spine is involved. The upper cervical spine can cause migraines, vertigo, dizziness, and ringing in the ears. The lower cervical spine can cause neurological symptoms going into the upper extremities, muscle weakness, tingling, and muscle atrophy. Because the neck supplies the entire nervous system, treatment must be very specific and precise. We use chiropractic treatment, decompression therapy, cervical traction, massage, and shockwave therapy to restore biomechanical function and address any neurological compression. Sciatic nerve pain does not always come from the sciatic nerve itself. It can also be due to conditions such as radiculopathy, myelopathy, or piriformis syndrome, in which a muscle clamps the sciatic nerve. To identify the exact source, we use orthopedic exams, neurological tests, imaging, and palpation. Treatment includes massage therapy and chiropractic care to correct the misalignment that causes the compression. When nerve damage is present, shockwave therapy is used as our regenerative option to stimulate repair and regrowth of the damaged nerve tissue and restore normal function. Read more about Sciatica

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner portion of a spinal disc pushes outward, which can press on nearby nerves and cause pain, numbness, or weakness. When a patient comes in with a herniated disc, we perform a full history evaluation, an orthopedic exam, a neurological exam, and a range-of-motion assessment. We take X-rays to check for any loss of disc height or other disc-related issues. We have treated disc injuries as large as 8.59 millimeters, which is typically considered a surgical consult, and reduced them to one to two millimeters through conservative care alone. Most patients see significant improvement within two to two and a half months of consistent treatment. Read more about Disc Injuries

Headaches and migraines can have several causes, from cervicogenic issues originating in the neck to dehydration or nervous system involvement. We start by examining the headache itself to identify the main cause. We perform neurological exams and take X-rays if we think the neck is involved. The upper cervical spine, typically the first or second vertebrae, is usually the cause. At California Oaks Chiropractic, we use techniques such as spinal adjustments, decompression therapy if disc-related, and massage therapy for muscles that may have an underlying role in the headaches. Scoliosis comes in two forms: structural and functional. Structural scoliosis is present from birth and is usually only addressed through surgical intervention. Functional scoliosis develops over time or through a traumatic event and is reversible with treatment. Diagnosis includes palpation, orthopedic exams, and X-rays. Most people do not know they have scoliosis until it is identified during an exam. Treatment includes a minimum of 24 chiropractic visits, approximately 10 weekly massage sessions to treat the surrounding muscles, followed by a strengthening protocol and maintenance care to support long-term spinal stability. Whiplash is one of the most common injuries following a car accident. We perform X-rays, including flexion and extension views of the neck, to check for instability. Confirming spinal stability before starting care is an important first step. Our typical treatment plan includes chiropractic care two to three times a week initially to correct biomechanical changes. If neurological compression is present in the cervical spine or lower back, decompression therapy is also used to address the compression and stop further damage. Read more about Whiplash

Shoulder pain can develop from falls, direct trauma, tendon injuries, or fractures, and the treatment approach depends on what we find. For soft-tissue injuries, such as a torn supraspinatus tendon, we use shockwave therapy to stimulate healing and restore range of motion. For fractures, we diagnose the injury, refer the patient to an orthopedist for surgical care if needed, and then use shockwave therapy after surgery to support bone healing and promote proper scar tissue formation. We have successfully treated patients in their 80s with significant shoulder injuries using this approach. Read more about Shoulder Pain

Vertigo affects much more than the ability to walk or see straight; for some, vertigo makes everyday tasks impossible. It typically begins with an underlying issue, such as a problem with the neck, inner ear, or communication between the nerves and the brain. It is common for patients with vertigo to remain undiagnosed for several years until discovering the root cause of the problem. In most cases, chiropractic care solves the issue. Arm and leg pain that has no obvious injury site often comes from the spine. Nerve compression in the cervical spine can cause pain, tingling, muscle weakness, and atrophy in the upper extremities. Nerve compression in the lower back and sacral region can cause similar symptoms going into the lower extremities, including the hamstrings and feet. We use orthopedic exams, neurological tests, imaging, and palpation to identify exactly which nerve is being compressed and where. Chiropractic care targets the root causes of arm and leg pain, addressing discomfort without the need for medication or invasive procedures. Read more about Arm & Leg Pain

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed, causing burning pain, tingling, or numbness in the palm and fingers. It can also cause weakness in the hand and difficulty picking up small objects. The cause is not always obvious. It can stem from repetitive hand use, a wrist injury, or even nerve irritation in the spine. At California Oaks Chiropractic, Dr. Vournazos takes a non-invasive approach focused on finding the root cause. Read more about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Knee pain from degeneration, osteoarthritis, or meniscus and ligament damage can significantly affect your ability to walk and perform daily activities. If left untreated, it can also cause secondary issues such as low back pain from compensating for the affected knee. We start with a full history, orthopedic exam, and X-rays to identify the root cause. For degeneration and soft tissue damage, we use shockwave therapy to target the damaged tissues and stimulate regrowth. We have treated patients who came in unable to walk without a walker and were able to walk freely following shockwave treatment. Read more about Knee Pain
