Auto Injury and Whiplash Treatment in Murrieta, CA

Car accidents and auto injuries can be physically and emotionally overwhelming. Most people who have been involved in an accident don’t realize they have received a whiplash injury until weeks or months later, when the problem becomes persistent and leads to other issues.

Dr. Phillip Vournazos, D.C., has treated many patients in Murrieta who experienced whiplash and other auto injuries. At California Oaks Chiropractic, care begins with careful listening, thorough evaluation, and clear explanations so you understand what is happening in your body and why symptoms may appear or evolve over time.

Our goal is to help your body heal properly after trauma while protecting your spine, joints, and nervous system.

What Is Whiplash?

Whiplash is a common auto injury that occurs when the head and neck are suddenly forced forward and backward. This usually happens during car accidents, but can also occur while playing contact sports such as football, or from an assault or other physical trauma.

Such rapid movement places stress on the spine and surrounding soft tissue and may result in:

  • Disc bulges and herniation
  • Subluxations (misalignment of the vertebrae in the spine)
  • Injured bones in the spine
  • Irritated and damaged nerves
  • Pulled ligaments and muscles in the neck

Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash injuries can range from mild to very severe. Injuries tend to be more significant when your headrest is positioned too low. If the impact was quite severe or the headrest was low, there is the possibility that bones are broken or tissue is damaged.

It is highly recommended that you see a chiropractor for a thorough examination and X-rays. Even if the impact seemed mild, you may have whiplash if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:

  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder, upper back, and arm pain
  • Headaches
  • Blurred vision
  • Pain when turning the head
  • Inability to move or turn the head fully
  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness
  • Numbness or tingling in the arms, hands, and fingers
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Depression

As you can see, there is a wide range of symptoms, and not all of them may be immediately traceable to whiplash. Your pain could be related to whiplash and may need treatment to correct the underlying problem.

How Auto Injuries Are Diagnosed

When a patient comes in after a car accident, we start with a full clinical history. From there, we perform orthopedic exams, neurological tests, and range-of-motion assessments.

We also take complete dynamic X-rays, including flexion and extension views of the spine, to check for any instability. After reviewing our findings, we provide a treatment plan based on what we found.

Our Approach to Auto Injury and Whiplash Treatment

Since a car accident is a traumatic event, we first make sure the body is not unstable from the impact. Any spinal changes are corrected through chiropractic treatment, typically two to three times a week at first. Through gentle adjustments, people find great improvement from the pain associated with whiplash and are set on a road to full recovery.

If there is neurological compression in the cervical spine or lower back, we also perform decompression therapy to address those issues.

Auto Accident & Whiplash Patient Case Studies

Management of Whiplash with Muscle Atrophy Using Decompression Therapy

Patient Information: A 27-year-old male patient with a physically demanding job.

Symptoms: He came in with neck and lower back pain after being rear-ended on the freeway. He had numbness and tingling in his right upper and lower extremities. His muscles were starting to atrophy due to neurological compression, and he was losing muscle function.

Diagnosis: The rear-end collision caused biomechanical changes to the spine and neurological compression in the cervical and lower back. We ordered an MRI to assess the extent of the damage, which confirmed there was an increased risk from the compression.

Treatments: We performed decompression and chiropractic treatment targeting the cervical spine and lower back.

Outcome: Treatment corrected all of the issues he was experiencing and stopped the neurological damage from progressing further.

Recovery From Severe Headaches Following an Auto Accident

Patient Information: A male patient who was involved in a car accident.

Symptoms: He came in with severe headaches that would not go away after the accident. He had an aura, which is usually associated with migraines. He also had photosensitivity, nausea, and ringing in the ears. The symptoms were pretty debilitating.

Diagnosis: The car accident caused whiplash, which changed the curvature of the neck and led to severe headaches.

Treatments: Treatment focused on correcting the neck curvature through chiropractic care and ensuring the spine was properly aligned. We managed inflammation with our traction table and worked the neck muscles.

Outcome: After treatment, his neck curvature was corrected, inflammation was managed, and his headache symptoms improved. He was able to return to normal daily function.

Whiplash Treatment FAQs

What are the long-term complications of untreated whiplash?
When left untreated, whiplash injuries may lead to:

  • Chronic neck pain
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Ongoing muscle tension
  • Postural imbalance
  • Increased risk of future injury

Early evaluation helps reduce these risks.

What is the best treatment for whiplash?
Chiropractic treatment is effective for correcting biomechanical changes caused by whiplash. A treatment plan incorporating chiropractic manipulation, spinal decompression, and massage therapy to the neck and lower back can address the problem at its root.

Does medical insurance cover whiplash treatment?
Coverage varies by policy. It is recommended to contact your insurance provider directly to confirm your specific coverage and benefits before starting treatment.

Is it normal to have delayed symptoms after a car accident?
Yes. Symptoms often appear days after an accident due to inflammation and muscle strain. Pain, stiffness, numbness, or tingling may appear or worsen in the days and weeks following the accident, which is why early evaluation is important even if you feel fine immediately after.

Can chiropractic adjustments help with whiplash?
Yes. Chiropractic adjustments correct spinal changes caused by the accident and restore normal function. When combined with decompression therapy, chiropractic care can stop further damage and restore normal muscle and joint function.

Is chiropractic care safe after a car accident?
Yes. Before starting treatment, we assess spinal instability with flexion and extension X-rays. Care is provided only after we confirm what the body can safely handle, and the approach is adjusted based on the severity of the injury.

Can whiplash symptoms get worse over time?
Whiplash symptoms can worsen over time when left untreated. This is because the spinal column becomes misaligned, resulting in nerve impingement, muscle atrophy, and muscle weakening.
